If you are arrested, you have the right to free legal advice at the police station, whatever your immigration status. You also have the right to have someone told you have been arrested, and the right to an interpreter.

• Ask for a solicitor with protest experience. Duty solicitors do not always have it.
• Tell your solicitor you have leave to remain, and tell them early. It changes the advice they should give you.
• Do not accept a caution without advice. A caution is an admission of guilt, goes on the Police National Computer, and can count against a later visa, settlement or citizenship application.
• You do not have to answer questions before you have spoken to a solicitor. You can give your name, address and date of birth.
